LeasePlan introduces GreenPlan to support businesses and business drivers in decreasing CO² emissions

Business drivers are becoming more aware of the important role they play in reducing environmental pollution. A LeasePlan survey that was conducted at the end of 2006 worldwide indicates that most business drivers are willing to act on reducing the environmental pollution, such as the accelerating increase of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases.

In order to facilitate the willingness to act, LeasePlan recently introduced a new global initiative to support businesses and business drivers to realise ‘greener’ fleets and less pollution, named GreenPlan.

Shared responsibility

Vahid Daemi, LeasePlan’s Chief Executive Officer, indicates that the time to act is now. “We should be honest about our position; we deal with an underlying asset that is a heavy contributor to overall pollution. We do not believe there is a viable alternative to its usage, but we do want to contribute to decrease the effects that transportation is having on the environment. We will provide businesses and business drivers with tools to act upon the social responsibility we all have.”

LeasePlan also takes its responsibility in this respect. In order to meet the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, the European Union is giving the indication that car manufacturers should aim at reducing car emissions to an average CO2 emission level of 130 gr/km by 2012. LeasePlan will use that figure as a reference for its own fleet, and compensate for the possible difference between target and reality by investing in offsetting activities.

A global solution to a global issue

The willingness to act is here, and therefore LeasePlan has launched a global solution to help businesses decrease their CO2 emissions. Daemi: “With the new service named GreenPlan we will help clients assess their fleet’s emissions and put in place actions to reduce those emissions through time. We can facilitate offsetting part or all of the CO2 emission. The role of business drivers in this process is also very important. Conscious driving can significantly decrease the CO2 emissions of a vehicle. Next to this, a driver should be willing to choose a car with lower CO2 emissions. Within GreenPlan, LeasePlan offers tools and information on car choice and driving behaviour.”

Having recognised that global warming is a global issue, LeasePlan has developed GreenPlan as a global initiative. GreenPlan is part of LeasePlan’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and to help companies implement environment responsible fleet practices.

Verified by TüV Rheinland Group and supported by Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE), GreenPlan reflects LeasePlan’s belief that companies can play a vital role in the reduction of CO2 emissions, and provides them with the tools that make doing so, easier and more effective than ever.
